Training: Our department offers Bachelor’s (BSc) and Master’s (MSc) degree programs in Geology, Mineral exploration, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Engineering geology and geotechnics, and Environmental geology as well as Doctoral (PhD) programs in Geology, Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology and Environmental geology.

Geology:  Geology is a science that studies the Earth, the materials that make up the Earth, and the structure, formation and formation processes of these materials. The main scope of geology is to train professionals who are capable of working at the international level with the skills to work with geological mapping, mineral exploration, scientific research and practical application. Within the field of geology, we offer specialized training in geological mapping, the study of fossilized floras and faunas (paleontology) and ,the study of minerals and rocks (mineralogy and petrography).
Graduates will obtain the following skills:
  • Methods and methodologies in fundamentals of geology and exploration
  • Geological mapping
  • Mineral prospecting
  • Geological survey projects and budgeting
Mineral exploration:  We will train professionals in industrial geological exploration who have high theoretical knowledge of the structure and formation conditions of mineral deposits, their distribution and location patterns using advanced research methods with modern techniques and technologies.
Graduates will obtain the following skills:
  • Fundamentals of geology and exploration
  • Research and analysis of the patterns of formation and distribution of mineral deposits
  • To obtain skills and methodologies of managing mineral deposits exploration
  • Ability to estimate mineral deposits resources
Geophysics: Modern geophysical methods are widely used in the study of the Earth's internal structure, minerals exploration, engineering geology, archeology and hydrogeology. The geophysicists will decide the important scientific and practical goals that will determine the future development of Mongolia.
Graduates will obtain the following skills:
  • Selecting geophysical methods that fully meet the requirements for solving the problems of a certain stages of geological research and prospecting
  • Exploration geophysical methods to discover all types of mineral deposits, conduct field research, and acquire management skills
  • Geophysical data processing and acquisition
  • Ability to use new geophysical methods and equipment, repair tools
Hydrogeology: A hydrogeological engineer develops theory and methods related to groundwater monitoring and analysis, conducts all stages of hydrogeological exploration, hydrogeological mapping, selects the design of the drainage system and ensures the safety of mine dewater, groundwater composition and quality and its formation and distribution patterns, groundwater pollution, protection and recovery.
Graduates will obtain the following skills:
  • Ability to determine, plan, implement, monitor and analyze water policy
  • Skills to detect groundwater deposits, determine usable resources, and models of groundwater quality, origin, pollution and resources
  • To conduct water pollution prevention and remediation studies, mine dewatering, to assessment of seepage of tailing dam
  • To conduct petroleum hydrogeological research, permafrost and geothermal research.
Engineering geology and geotechnics:  The engineering geology studies the geological and geotechnical conditions to select suitable sites for the construction of all types of engineering structures and to ensure its normal use.
Graduates are expected to obtain the following skills:
  • Determining the geological environment, engineering geology and geotechnical conditions of regions, cities, towns, mineral deposits, mining areas as well as construction sites
  • To determine detailed engineering geological parameters required for the design and development of engineering structures
  • Ability to determine, prevent, protect, develop optimal methods, control and monitor the negative effects of geological processes and phenomena on mines and all types of engineering structures.

Research scope:

  • Geological development of Mongolia, Magmatism, Tectonics, Geodynamics
  • Geological mapping and structural geology research
  • Petrology, geochemistry and geochronology of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks
  • Mineralogy, petrography, ore mineralogy
