DEPARTMENT OF PETROLEUM AND DRILLING ENGINEERING

Our Mission: To prepare highly educated personnel who obtained capability of introducing new world-class techniques and advanced technologies in the field of solid mineral resources, water, oil, gas, engineering-geological and technical well drilling, production, storage, transportation and supply of petroleum products in Mongolia.
 
Brief introduction: Our department commenced preparing drilling engineers domestically since 1979, and petroleum engineering professionals  since 1991. Since the first admission, 60 graduations in the field of drilling have been completed and 473 people have been trained as drilling engineers and 166 graduations in the field of petroleum have been completed and over 1200 people have been trained as petroleum engineers. Since 2005, a total of 108 specialists have been trained in the "Gas Engineering" /"Gas transmission and supply"/ specialty, and a total of 61 specialists in the "Oil Refinery Engineering" /"Oil Processing" specialty since 1997. It can be seen from this that over the past 28 years, more than 2,000 engineers with higher education have been trained in our department. Totally, over 2000 engineers have been prepared at the Petroleum and Drilling Engineering Department for 28 years.
Currently, there are 12 people, 7 of them whom received PhD degree, working in the department, 9 lecturers and 3 employees, and it has 1 teaching laboratory, 4 classrooms, and 1 field practice ground. Currently, the department is conducting bachelor's programs in "Petroleum Engineering", "Gas Engineering", "Oil Refinery Engineering", "Drilling Engineering", and "Petroleum Engineering", "Drilling Engineering", "Gas Engineering" programs for research, professional master's and doctorate courses, respectively.
 
Petroleum Engineering

 

  1. Knows the function, design, working principle and technological operation of oil drilling facilities and tools;
  2. Constructs petroleum and its products construction and facilities according to plans; 
  3. Knows the function, design, working principle and technological operation of oil and gas production facilities and tools;
  4. Manages to store, transporting and distributing processes of oil and gas and their products, and holds supplying and distribution operations at oil terminals, oil product depots and stations;
  5. Specialists will be prepared who have the ability to design, utilize and manage gas transmission, gas pipelines and networks, terminals, refueling station and their facilities’ function, structure, and principles of operation.
The graduates are expected to acquire the following knowledge. Here in:
  • Determines the purpose of oil and gas drilling, to evaluate the geological and technical conditions, to design the well structure, to choose drilling method and working principle of the technical facilities, to select optimal drilling techniques,to define  correct technological procedures, to manage drilling process and safety, and to assess the environment possible harmful effects, to formulate the plan reduction and elimination for risks;
  • Constructs and assembles the oil processing plant, oil and gas terminal, oil depots, gas station, and their facilities, tanks, vessels, pipes; calculates engineering estimations and choose materials for oil and gas facilities;
  • Performs the penetration and testing of oil formations at oil field, fracturing technology, to determine and choose technique and technology of oil field development phases, to study hydrodynamics of oil wells;
  • Inspects storing, transporting and distributing methods and technology of oil and gas terminals, depots, gas stations, and the tanks, equipment, and technological operations of petroleum and its products, as well as measurements, calculations, and quality control during storing, transporting, and distributing the petroleum and its products;
  • Performs the technological operations for gas transmission andsupply, to design the project layout of gas supply system and network, to perform hydraulic calculation of gas network, to define and to choose main fittings of gas network and pipeline construction materials;
The graduatesare expected to acquire the following skills. Here in:
  • Understands the main goal of oil and gas drilling, makes oil well structure design which based on geological stratigraphy, location of formation and other geological and technical properties, chooses convenient drilling rig, field equipments and settings, calculation of the drilling procedure, drilling fluid and mud,  solution of cement and paste composition;
  • Constructs and assembles the oil and gas facilities, constructions, tanks, vessels as a technological procedure, to determine, diagnose, and service the breakage and defects, and calibrate them, explain and utilize engineering drawings;
  • Chooses optimal technique and technology of oil extraction for field development condition, to install and assemble facilities and field equipments, to determine, diagnose, and service the  breakage and defects, and  calibrate them, to perform oil recovery phases such as natural lifting, using pumping unit, gas lifting, recovering oil well yield, extracting oil and gas from multi-layered formation;
  • Performs technological operations such as transporting, unloading, storing, loading, and distributing of oil and gas, their products, to solve issues about usage, service and maintenance, calibration of petroleum constructions, tanks, and equipments, utilize modern and remote-control software of oil and gas terminals, depots, to explain and process the engineering design and layout of petroleum constructions and facilities;
  • Performs gas network and its calculation, to optimize structure of tanks and equipment, to process and implement gas supply projects according to consumer’s requirements, to choose gas supply equipment and pipeline working regime optimally, to manage service, maintenance, and calibration, to make engineering design of any gas facility and device as same as related codes, and also to explain, utilize, assemble them, utilize modern and remote-control software;

Engineering
The main goals of preparing a gas engineering specialist are:
  • to prepare the engineer who knows the geology, exploration, drilling, extraction, processing, transportation, supply, utilization and their structure, purpose, operation principles of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon gas;
  • to prepare specialists who are skilled in designing, assembling, and using.
  • Gas network, its calculation, the structure of used tanks and equipment, gas distribution, transportation, storage, gas fuel supply project development and implementation according to customer orders, gas fuel supply equipment, pipeline work procedures, maintenance and configuration, any construction equipment for gas fuel development and reading of device images in accordance with standards, use, assembly, operation and maintenance of complete systems with modern program management;
Petroleum Refinery Engineering
We will train individuals and engineers who have the basic knowledge of oil refinery engineering and technology, the ability to personally participate in technical operation and technological activities, to solve problems, to think systematically, to work at the national and international level, and to have professional and ethical responsible knowledge, practices, and skills
Drilling Engineering
Professionals are expected toobtain the ability to solve technical and technological issues of drilling for solid mineral resources, water, engineering geological research, and geotechnology, to manage exploration drilling operation, to implement projects and analyze data, and to perform scientific study.
The graduatesare expected to acquire the following knowledge:
  • To understand thesettings of facilities and field equipments used for drilling, calculate the technical properties and choose the optimal structure;
  • To process the adjusting drilling technology depending on geology-technical conditions;
  • To solve some difficulties during drilling and manage precautionmethods;
  • To do service and maintenance for drilling facilities, equipment and devices;
  • To organize and manage drilling process, to perform geological exploration operation;
The graduates are expected to acquire the following skills:
  • To choose drilling facilities and field equipment, to formulate technological regime;
  • To work on drilling facilities and field equipment confidently;
  • To choose cleaning substances for drilling process based on drilling condition;
  • To make well design depending on geological-technical conditions, to select drilling bit, and to calculate engineering calculations for drilling bit;
  • During all phases of exploration for mineral resource deposits, to make drilling projects and to manage drilling operations
